What is Extras Cover?

Extras Cover is a Health Insurance policy or part of a more comprehensive package, that covers some of the costs of various  healthcare services that happen outside of a hospital that are not usually covered by Medicare.

These services are typically things you use quite a bit, like trips to the dentist or optometrist.

Extras Cover is also sometimes called General Treatment or Ancillary Cover.

How is Extras Cover different from other kinds of insurance?

Hospital Cover

Hospital Cover comes in handy for private hospital treatment, helping to cover in-hospital costs such as accommodation, theatres fees, medication and surgeons’ fees, depending on your particular policy

Extras Cover

Extras Cover works a bit differently. It can help you pay for a range of health services not covered by Medicare such as dental and optical.

Family Combination Cover

Family Extras policies and family Hospital policies cover very different things, so a lot of people actually get both.

If you take out both Hospital Cover and Extras Cover for your family, you can usually combine them into a single policy. You can also combine different levels of cover to suit your needs. For example, you might want a gold Hospital Cover and a medium Extras policy.

Helpful Tip:

Extras Cover can be very useful when it comes to preventative health. These are treatments that aim to prevent future health conditions. For instance, regular dental cleanings can help prevent gum disease and tooth decay, vaccinations can protect  against serious diseases  and exercise physiologists can help strengthen muscles to avoid falls  Extras Cover can also be helpful with management of conditions, for example, a dietitian can help with weight loss, an occupational therapist can assist with learning challenges, and a physiotherapist can support in the management of an injury.
